The term “Master-Planned Community” is widely used by developers and real estate professionals, more commonly perhaps in the Sunbelt states of the west and south. But an accepted definition of “master-planned community” is hard to find.

It might be easier to determine what a master-planned community is not: it is not a neighborhood or a subdivision within a city. Instead, a master-planned community is more like a city within a city. That’s because residents of a master-planned community can typically find a number of dining, shopping, entertainment, and recreation options available to them without leaving the community.
